I am sure that by now you have heard all of the ways that your iPhone and iPad are able to track you. Yes, even your Android phone can track you. But surely, Google and Apple would ONLY use this info for good reason right?
Yes, both companies use this info so they can give you better service. The location of your phone is also used with many apps…that is what lots of these apps are for. DUH! Hell, they even have the GPS that has helped them find people that are lost or in need of emergency services. See, tracking is GOOD!
Just think of the On Star commercial….Deer jumps in from of car…driver swerves, car crashes, nice voice announces that “On Star has been alerted of a crash”, then the nice voice says, “stay calm, help is on the way”. OMG! The GPS has saved a life.
We’ve known for years that Car GPS tracks where you drive and no one has complained. It could save your life, give you mapped out directions, find your car if it’s stolen or help find out who killed you. Ok, I watch CSI a lot and I have seen how they pull out a GPS to prove that a car was in your area and the body dump site…that puts the killer (or a car) at the scene and even time stamps it. It’s a win all the way around, right? Crime solved!
Now if you watch CSI you also know that if the Crime Lab finds a cell phone they can download every contact number, call, photo, text message….from that phone in minutes. But, that is just made up TV show and not real life…or is it? Oh well, even if it is real, the police would only use that technology if you had been a victim of a crime (probably already dead) or if you were arrested for doing a crime so who cares? As some Facebook users have commented things like “If you aren’t doing anything wrong then it doesn’t matter” or “They only use this information to help solve crimes”. Yeah, if you haven’t murdered anyone or robbed a bank then the police would never even look into your cell phone.
What if the police pulled you over for speeding and wanted to download all your cell phone info? They would never do that since they really don’t have reason to know whom you call, text with, your pics, banking info, passwords or any other personal info on your cell phone. Hell, maybe you just had a tail light out, so knowing all that other stuff is totally unrelated to your “crime”.
Well, You might want to check out the video of radio host David Pakman talking to Mark Fancher, attorney at the ACLU Michigan. It seems that there is debate about Why Are The Michigan State Police Downloading Your Cell Phone Data during a regular traffic stop? In the video you will hear how the Michigan State Police are stonewalling request for the info about what they are downloading. Could it be that they just want all your info on record in-case later you are found dead it help them solve the case? Why yes, I am sure that is it.
So, if Google, Apple, and the police can get this info in a matter of minutes…who else could get it? Surely it is a special program that only secure people have access to right?
Well, here is a video from ABC World News that shows Diane Sawyers phone having the locations of everywhere she has been in the last 10 months downloaded in minutes.
Do you think they had a super secure clearance to get that? Nope anyone can get the app to download your tracking. But, no one would do that, right? Only the police, emergency services, Google, Apple, a Pervert, a suspicious husband, an abusive ex, a stalker…no one that would ever use the info to hurt you or your child.
So, just go on with your life, none of that stuff matters as long as no one ever gets a hold of your cell phone.
Oh, you might want to check your tail lights before you drive anywhere (at least in Michigan). Because if Mark Fancher, attorney at the ACLU Michigan can’t find out what info they are getting from your phone…you may never know until it is used against you. So, double check that none of your contacts could ever be involved in a crime (guilt by association), that you have not been near any crime areas (puts you ate the scene of the crime), that you have never texted that you want to kill your kids or husband (every parent has said that but, it could be a real death threat), and make sure that you have plenty of money in the bank (the person with your info might need a few things).
Glad we live in the Home of the Free…oh never mind.
